Hacienda Hills Trailhead, a mapped hiking trailhead run by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority.
Hours and details on Google Maps(opens Google Maps in a new tab)The story
In the early 1990s, surrounding communities were fighting the expansion of the Puente Hills Landfill, and the deal that emerged sent a dollar per ton of refuse into preserving the hills as a condition of the landfill's approval1 . The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority was created out of that arrangement in 1994, and today it manages more than 3,800 acres with 23 miles of public trails1 . The Hacienda Hills Trailhead itself was constructed and opened on September 22, 2005 .
The original idea belonged to Bob Henderson, a former Whittier mayor and the founding chairman of the Habitat Authority1 . The trailhead and the surrounding canyon habitat are now managed and restored by the Authority's staff and rangers1,2 .
Streetsblog Los Angeles describes it as a less-travelled pocket of the Puente Hills, where enclosed tree cover and a dewy path give a misty morning walk a velvety feeling3 . Modern Hiker singles out the trailhead for its parking, water, restrooms, and fully accessible section, calling the Hacienda Hills route one that stands out among the Preserve's trails4 .
