8511 Duchess Dr, West Whittier-Los Nietos, CA 90606
Long-serving county library branch with a Spanish collection and community meeting spaces.
Official site, hours and details(opens in a new tab)The story
Los Nietos Library began in September 1919, shortly after World War I, and has since served the community from five different locations, including a stint with a bookmobile1 . The current building on Duchess Drive, about 7,040 square feet, opened in November 2017 on land provided by the Los Nietos School District, replacing a much smaller 1979 facility1,2,3 . Community members asked for a multigenerational gathering place for youth, and the new library was built to answer that .
The project was funded through a program by County Supervisor Don Knabe to build or renovate libraries across his district, with the Los Nietos School District providing the land2,3 . Library manager Daniel Kaufman runs the branch today, and the county's Department of Arts and Culture commissioned artist Louise Griffin for the facade mural1 .
The mural's timeline walks through the area's past, from its Native beginnings through the 1784 land grant to retired soldier Manuel Nieto, whose rancho gave the community its name3 . If you're staying in Whittier or Santa Fe Springs, it's a friendly corner spot with a genuinely local story on its walls3,1 .
