The story

About Smith Park

The inspiration

Tennis courts followed in 1932, a pool in 1953, and a major expansion in 2000 after a county park bond grant1 . Its picnic areas also reflect the heritage of the Gabrielino-Tongva Native Americans2 .

Who's behind it

Local artist Dixie Giering created the hand-painted entrance tile mural, and replicas of Gabrielino-Tongva village structures were added during the expansion3 . The 2019 playground was designed with input from local kids and built in a single day with KaBOOM!, the Asian Youth Center and the CarMax Foundation4,5 .
