Official site, hours and details(opens in a new tab)The story
Montclair's Civic Center exists because residents planned ahead: as early as 1953, the community negotiated a lease-purchase of land at the southeast corner of Benito and Fremont for a permanent home for city government1 . Before that, the young city's council met in a former butcher shop on San Bernardino Street2 .
The city was incorporated as Monte Vista on April 25, 1956, with James West, a citrus grower and pest control company operator, serving as Mayor alongside council members Paul Frame, Miller Buchannan, Glen Wolf and Dana Paney2 . Today the Civic Center at 5111 Benito Street is the seat of city government, where the Mayor and City Council hold their meetings2,3 .
If you're staying nearby, the Civic Center is the working heart of Montclair, where you can watch a City Council meeting, browse the meeting agendas, or handle any city services you might need3 . The city is also investing in the site through a master plan that brings new landscaping, accessible ramps and parking, benches, amphitheater seating and a Memorial Garden reflecting pool, so the 1964 Mid-Century Modern complex is getting easier and more pleasant to walk around4 .
