The story

About Sycamore Canyon Trail

The inspiration

The canyon holds a perennial creek and large riparian trees, and because its resources are ecologically sensitive, the trail is open to hikers only1 .

Who's behind it

The trail is managed by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority, an agency dedicated to acquiring and restoring preserved open space across roughly 3,900 acres in the area2 . The Habitat Authority's focus since inception has been buying up remaining open land before it disappears, alongside managing the preserve and its trails2 .

What to order

Popular dish

The main trail1

a walk along a meandering canyon path that follows the creek beneath large riparian trees

  • Birdwatching: regular sightings include the coastal cactus wren, the federally threatened coastal California gnatcatcher, and seasonally migrating birds1
  • Wildlife watching: mule deer, bobcats, several bat species, and California toads all live in the canyon1
  • A longer outing: at the trail's end, hikers can continue onto Rattlesnake Ridge Trail via a strenuous, minimally managed switchback footpath1

What people are saying

Writers at CA Hiking Adventures describe the trail as a short, easy out-and-back of about 3.3 miles that works as a quick nature recharge before or after work3 . Hiking guides and the preserve's own rules both stress that no dogs, bikes, or horses are allowed here, to protect the wildlife1,3 .

Why you should try it

If you are staying nearby in Whittier, this is a genuinely easy way to stand under a canopy of trees beside a creek without leaving the city1,3 . Bring your own water, walk quietly, and keep an eye out for birds and bobcats1 .
