The story

About Hellman Park Trailhead

The inspiration

Hellman Park exists because Whittier decided in the early 1970s to buy a piece of its hills as open space, a move that councilman Bob Henderson said set a precedent for saving the rest of them1 . Today the land sits inside the Puente Hills Preserve, where the Habitat Authority works to acquire and restore habitat while keeping it available for recreation2,1 .

Who's behind it

Bob Henderson, a Whittier council member and Habitat Authority board chair, was central to the park deals, and Michael Hughes later chaired the board as well1,3 .

What to order

Popular dish

Peppergrass Trail4

the direct climb from the Greenleaf Avenue gate, well known for its strenuous uphill grade .

  • Mariposa Trail: a hiking footpath that branches off mid-slope, with canyon views and occasional shade .4
  • Rattlesnake Ridge Trail: the Authority's own photos from the Hellman Park area show off the views here .

What people are saying

Parking is the recurring headache: the official site directs visitors to park offsite and outside city restricted-parking zones, and press coverage notes a preferential parking district covering the streets below4,3 .

Why you should try it

If you are staying in or near Whittier, this is a genuine hillside preserve at the end of a residential street, with a restroom at the trailhead and a climb that earns its views4 . Bring your own water, expect a short walk from wherever you park, and give yourself a morning for it4,3 .
