The story

About Arroyo Pescadero Trailhead

The inspiration

Arroyo Pescadero sits on a former oil field, and several of its pathways were once oil company roads used to move drilling equipment1,2 . Chevron extracted oil from these Whittier hillsides for decades until the late 1980s, after which the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority acquired the land and spent years restoring coastal sage scrub, oak and walnut woodlands, riparian forest and chaparral2 . The trailhead opened in 2002, built with funding from Los Angeles County Proposition A, and the entrance gate was designed by students at Whittier Cal High School3 .

Who's behind it

The trailhead is managed by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority, a joint-powers agency created in 19943 . Its founding chairman was Bob Henderson, a former Whittier mayor whose idea tied hillside preservation to landfill operations, and the two-mile loop trail here bears his name3,1 . Andrea Gullo has served the agency as executive director4 .

  • Arroyo San Miguel Trail: 1.8 miles passing habitat restoration projects and stands of native coastal sage scrub, home to the federally threatened coastal California gnatcatcher .1,2
  • Deer Loop Trail: a 0.8-mile option off the Henderson loop, lined with eucalyptus planted by a previous oil-operator owner .2
  • Educational kiosks: found along a short ADA-friendly decomposed granite trail near the trailhead .1
  • Rammed-earthen amphitheater: a rest area at a scenic vista .1

Why you should try it

If you are staying nearby, this is a gentle, well-marked introduction to restored hillside habitat, with rabbits, abundant birds and signage that explains the land's oil-field past2 . The gated entrance offers parking, a restroom, a drinking fountain, ADA access and equestrian staging, so you can show up with nothing but shoes1 .
