The story

About William R. Mason Regional Park

The inspiration

The land that became Mason Park was originally part of Rancho San Joaquin, granted to Jose Sepulveda in 1842 and later folded into the sprawling Irvine ranch holdings1 .

Who's behind it

The Orange County Board of Supervisors renamed it from University Regional Park in recognition of his impact on the county, including his role in the land donation1,2 .

Visitors keep coming back to the lake, where ducks, geese, turtles and the occasional heron or cormorant gather along the shore2 . The Orange County Register points to the remote-controlled model yacht races run by the Orange County Model Sailing Club on the water as a regular draw2 .
