The story

About Sycamore Canyon Park

The inspiration

Later phases added ten exercise stations, restored a riparian habitat zone, and improved drainage along the route1 . The city also won grant funding to install interpretive panels that explain the scenery, plants and wildlife to people walking the trail2 .

Who's behind it

Bob Rose, Diamond Bar's community services director, championed the educational panels, saying people walk the trail for exercise but also enjoy the views, and that signs explaining what you see enhance the experience2 . The park's renovations were master-planned by Hirsch and Associates, landscape architects and planners who work with public agencies on public spaces .

What to order

Popular dish

Canyon trail3

a 1.6-mile round-trip route above the creek, partly shaded by sycamore and oak trees, climbing through walnut woodland habitat .

  • Waterfall overlook: a small waterfall sits not far up the trail from the playground, a good turnaround point with small children .4
  • Play structures: two accessible play areas, one near the upper parking lot for smaller kids and a large one for bigger kids, plus a tot lot .4,5
  • Picnic and grills: picnic tables, shelters and grills sit throughout the park, close to the playground .6,4
  • Exercise stations: ten par-course stations sit on the mesa overlooking the canyon for a workout with a view .3,1

What people are saying

The family guide Fun Orange County Parks praises the setting, calling it part playground and part nature hike, with a creek, canyon and sweeping views of Diamond Bar4 . That guide also warns families to watch small kids near the steep slope by the larger play area and to note the trail is rattlesnake habitat4 . The city itself flags loose rocks, slippery slopes up to a 22 percent grade, and poison oak along the creek portion3 .

Why you should try it

If you are staying nearby, this is a local spot where kids can burn energy on big play structures while adults stretch their legs on a real canyon trail with a creek, waterfall overlook and workout stations3,4 . Bring lunch to grill, take the stairs to the overlook, and turn back at the waterfall if little legs get tired4 .
